Kia ora and welcome to The Three Lamps (T3L), an online literary journal from the University of Auckland. We’re named for an old Auckland landmark that used to stand at the top of College Hill – a gathering place where the trams turned, speakers drew crowds, and the city met the suburbs.
In our second issue, you'll find beaches and lakes, taxi drivers and teachers, myths modern and ancient, stories of loss and of language. You'll find work from current undergraduates, from masters students completing their manuscripts, from PhD students, alumni, and staff.
T3Stories features three pieces of short fiction; T3Essays offers three pieces of creative nonfiction; and in T3Poets we showcase three poets – with three poems each, naturally. T3Shorts are nonfiction vignettes, piecing together the Auckland of our present and future. Finally, T3Books showcases newly published and soon-to-be-published work from our writing community - the forthcoming novels Whispering City by Rachel O'Connor and Touching the Universe by Tom Romeo, and poetry from Vanishing Points, Professor Michele Leggott's most recent collection.
We hope this issue offers a wide window onto the University of Auckland's vibrant writing community.
Keep visiting The Three Lamps, and enjoy reading.
