Winner of the inaugural Phoenix Prize 2023. See How They Fall is set in Australia, amongst the privileged Turner family. The novel follows the tragic aftermath of a dinner at the family’s secluded compound, Yallambee. Through the eyes of two protagonists, Skye Turner, who has married into the dynasty, and Detective Senior Sergeant Mei O’Connor who has been assigned to the case after one person is murdered and another falls gravely ill with poisoning, the truth behind the gilded facade of the Turners begins to unravel.

‘It fulfils the expectations of the traditional crime novel with all its restrictions while offering something more: a sophisticated storyline running alongside familiar conventions, believable characters, social commentary and psychological insight.’ Read Patricia McLean’s full review in Landfall.

‘Rachel Paris comes blazing onto the scene with this pulse-pounding, whodunnit crime thriller. This is a claustrophobic, unpredictable, must-read psychological thriller with a banger of an ending’, writes Teresa Brock in Best Thriller Books.

‘Paris avoids clichés, tropes, and stereotypes, and deftly crafts well-developed characters who leap from the page. Beautiful descriptions of urban and rural landscapes add a literary richness to this page-turning thriller, establishing Paris as an author to watch in the world of domestic noir literature’, writes Kate Frawley in Books+Publishing.
